July 18 Harve Boucher to Port Hawkesbury

Weighed anchor this morning, leaving the anchorage at 09:00 with a destination of either Port Hawkesbury or Lennox Passage.

Winds were light SW 10 kn and we motor sailed.  Shortly we got a glimpse of the Strait of Canso causeway and swing bridge.  Also got a shot of the mountain with alot of the rock face gone, that was used for the causeway.

We passed through the lock, the bridge opened up and we were on our way. It is amazing how much the traffic backs when only one boat goes through.

Not far from the bridge, Mike spotted a seal playing.

Around 11:00, it was getting very warm so we decided to pull into the Strait of Canso Yacht Club and either stay or look for an anchorage close by. Decided to stay there for the night.  Beautiful little self help club with great facilities and very nice folks.  We met a couple that have been going to the Bahamas for many years and will certainly look for them down there.

After we did some laundry and washed the salt off the boat, we went for a walk. Port Hawkesbury is very historical.  Here is an old post office.

There are many historical plaques. Tthe waterfront bustled in the early 1900’s (according to this plaque).  Here is a photo of what it looks like today.

The walk to the stores and town was all up hill, like 5 blocks and it just got steeper and steeper!  By time we got up there, we were tired and hungry.  Had a nice supper and back to boat.   It was nice to see the Canadian economy at work on the east coast.

Today we travelled 10.1 nm.
